Simon Bickerton, Director of the Centre for Advanced Composite Materials and also Director of the Innovative Manufacturing and Materials Programme at the University of Auckland. He gained his PhD from the Centre for Composite Materials, University of Delaware, U.S.A. From 1999 to 2011 he served as an academic staff member at the University of Auckland. In 2012 he took up a three year secondment to the BMW Group, Munich, Germany. There he worked within the department responsible for manufacture of structural carbon fibre parts with focus on the BMW Project and the latest release of BMW’s 7-series. He maintains a strong collaboration with BMW, carrying out funded research on non-destructive analysis of fibre reinforcements, quality control in composites manufacturing, and manufacture and performance of sandwich structures for automotive application.

Abstract Research on fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) was initiated at the University of Auckland in the 1980s, supporting New Zealand’s innovative use of FRP in high-end yacht racing (the America’s Cup). In 2004 the Centre for Advanced Composite Materials (CACM) was established, and since that time materials and manufacturing processes have been developed for an increasing number of fields (marine, aerospace, automotive, medical, infrastructure and building, and sports).  The CACM includes extensive experimental facilities, and has developed significant expertise on analysis and simulation, which have been applied to novel materials, manufacturing process development, and component performance. An overview will be presented on the CACM, highlighting the breadth of research to date, and current research directions.
